Department of Town & Country Planning received Smart Digital Classroom Equipments from the LBS2ITS Project

Department of Town & Country Planning received Smart classroom equipment and Professional equipment for recording and live-streaming lectures from lbs2its project. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission under the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The professional equipment for recording and live-streaming of lectures was installed in OSGeo lab and GIS/RS lab at the Department of Town & Country Planning. Further T&CP was granted low-cost receivers and rugged outdoor receivers. Professional equipment for recording and live-streaming lectures will be utilized to virtually combine OSGeo Lab and GIS/RS Lab to facilitate additional student intake and conduct a virtual course. It facilitates carrying out lab sessions smoothly for both in-class and online participants simultaneously with many teacher-assisting functions. The Smart Interactive Board consists of a completely interactive screen with many inbuilt tools that could be used in explaining concepts, drawing graphs and images, annotating hand notes onscreen, and highlighting required sections in a lecture slide. The whole lab is recorded through a motion sensor camera which detects the movements of the lecturer giving proper visuals to distant participants. Several demonstration sessions on these newly installed devices are conducted.TCP is planning to utilize low-cost receivers and rugged outdoor receivers in teaching and learning activities for subject modules related to urban informatics and GIS. Further, students will utilize that equipment in problem-based activities (field data collection) related to land use and activity mapping, transport system mapping, ecosystem mapping, etc. The acquisition of new equipment of EU standards has improved the teaching and learning environment of the department. With the successful experience, similar equipment has been prioritized from the capital grant schemes available, particularly in exploiting the special budget dedicated to the additional student intake

Town and Country Planning Department

Department of Town & Country Planning, University of Moratuwa is a project partner of Erasmus+ grant recipient for Curricula Enrichment Delivered through the Application of Location-based Services to Intelligent Transport Systems [LBS2ITS]

The Technische Universitat Wien (TUW), Austria and Department of Town & Country Planning and Transport Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Moratuwa jointly received an Erasmus+ funded project titled 'Curricula Enrichment delivered through the Application of Location-based Services to Intelligent Transport Systems/LBS2ITS'.

The overarching aim of the project is higher education curriculum development to produce professionals who are equipped to improve the liveability of urban and provisional areas in the partner country. This will be achieved through delivering an enhanced curriculum and new didactic practices for Location-based Services (LBS) and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in Sri Lankan universities. The benefit will be to achieve safer, more reliable, more comfortable, more environment-friendly and energy-efficient integrated multimodal transportation solutions at regional and urban level with direct impact on the economy and the society. The project will enhance postgraduate and undergraduate programmes conducted by Department of Town & Country Planning and Transport Engineering Group, Department of Civil Engineering by improving lecture materials, physical and online learning resources and capacities of the academic and technical staff member. LBS2ITS is based on a consortium of three EU universities namely Technische Universitat Dresden (TUD), Germany; National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece and four Sri Lankan Universities. universities namely University of Moratuwa (UoM), Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL), University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) and General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) It will build a fully immersive and integrated teaching and learning experience. The outcome will be a digital learning environment supporting synthetic and real-world learning experiences encouraging self-paced learning modules for both teacher and students. It will contain digital resource kits for interaction with modern equipment, continuous assessment and two-way feedback. Webinars and virtual experiences will underpin real-world Problem-based Learning (PBL) scenarios. A key novelty will be inclusion of industry representatives and external experts in the advisory groups. These will support our dissemination and quality control initiatives, the relevance of the PBL and student learning outcomes. Mentorship and a focus on cultural awareness, gender equity and social parity will govern our principles for curricula enrichment.
