The Department of Languages of University of Moratuwa was established in March 2016 with the main objective of effectively addressing the language skills of the entire University. Prior to its establishment the English Language Teaching Centre of the University provided language-related services to enable new entrants to the University to switch to English as their sole medium of instruction, since a vast majority them obtain their school education either in Sinhala or in Tamil. These services were mainly provided to the Faculty of Engineering.
Following an analysis of the current needs in development of language skills, it was felt that an academic department rather than a teaching center could best meet these needs. The new Department will expand the programmes conducted by the English Language Teaching Centre and introduce new programmes aimed at meeting the language skills development needs of the entire University.
A Board of Studies comprising Heads of all the Academic Departments of the University and the Directors of UG and PG Studies of the three Faculties guides academic programmes of the Department. Department of Languages functions under the Faculty of Engineering for Administrative purposes while serving the language skills enhancement requirements of the entire university.
