Prof. Nalin Ratnayake has been appointed as the new head of the department since 01st April 2019.
Prof. Nalin Ratnayake is a Professor of Geology at the Department of Earth Resources Engineering, University of Moratuwa. In 1996, he graduated from the University of Peradeniya with BSc (Hons) degree in geology with Upper Second Class honours. He holds a Master's degree in Marine Geology from Shimane University, Japan obtained in 1999 and a doctorate in Marine Geology from Hokkaido University, Japan, obtained in 2004. Prof. Ratnayake has made an immense contribution in establishing the Ocean Resources and Petroleum Engineering study areas in the department.
He has given the leadership to attract many research and development grants at both national and international level, including the recent 40 million competitive grant of Accelerating Higher Education Expansion and Development Operation (AHEAD) for the proposal titled Potential of Rare Earth Elements (REE) in Sri Lankan Onshore and Offshore Terrains and Development of Extraction Techniques.
Prof. Ratnayake is a renowned scientist who has published in many international journals and served as the editor in many geology related national journals. He is also a reviewer of many international peer-reviewed journals.
Prof. Ratnayake is a valuable resource person of the Sri Lankan university system and shared his wisdom among a number of postgraduates and undergraduates, not only as a lecturer in University of Moratuwa, but also as a visiting lecturer in a number of universities in the island including University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, and University of Sabaragamuwa, etc.
The academics of the department hope to develop the department of the Earth of Resources Engineering in diverse focus areas in the stream of earth resources while uplifting infrastructure facilities under the guidance of the new leadership by the Prof. Nalin Ratnayake.
