403.EECon 2016 - The First International Conference of the Department of Electrical Engineering

The First International Conference, EECon-2016 organized by the Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 15th December 2016 at the Grand Ballroom of the hotel Kingsbury, Colombo. The conference was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, Prof. Ananda Jayawardane.

EECon 2016 solicited research papers describing significant and innovative research contributions to all fields of electrical engineering. The submissions were in a wide range of research topics in Electrical Engineering including the areas of power quality and reliability, power systems stability, protection and power systems control, electrical machines, power electronics and control drives, renewable energy systems and battery technologies, smart technologies and electric transportation, conventional energy technologies, power systems economics and applied robotics.

EECon 2016 received 41 papers for this very first one day conference and the Program Committee selected 18 papers for presentation in the conference program. The Program Publication Chairs and Program Chairs coordinated the review process with the help of 33 members of the Technical Program Committee. Additionally, 11 external reviewers assisted in the review process. Each paper was reviewed by at least three reviewers. The selected papers were presented under three main technical sessions merging different areas of Electrical Engineering: Applied robotics and smart grids; Power system economics, planning and operation; Renewable energy technologies and power electronics.
The conference was graced by the key-note speak by by Dr. Aravinthan, Assistant Professor, Wichita State University, USA, on “Robust Cyber-Power Dependent Systems: What it Means to Future Grid.” Also, Prof. Sarath Perera,  Professor, School of Electrical, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Wollongong conducted a tutorial on “Pathways for Management of Power Quality in Transmission and Distribution Networks,” and Prof M E El-Hawary, Associate Dean of Engineering Dalhouse University, Halifax, NS, Canada conducted the IEEE PES Distinguish Lecture Program as a part of the conference.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

402.EESOC Guest Lecture- Large Power Transformer Energization, Single Pole Tripping and Reclose Protection Scheme - Experience at Manitoba Hydro

Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) organized a guest lecture by Dr. Waruna Chandrasena and was held successfully on Thursday, 8th of December, 2016, at 11.15 am at the Final Year Lecturer room of the Department of Electrical Engineering. Dr. Waruna Chandrasena shared his experience under the topic, “Large Power Transformer Energization, Single Pole Tripping and Reclose Protection Scheme - Experience at Manitoba Hydro.” His lecture covered PSCAD simulation studies in large power transformer energization, including validation of recorded waveforms captured during commissioning tests in a project carried by the Manitoba Hydro. Experience in single pole tripping scheme in testing and commissioning on the 500 kV transmission network was also discussed and a review of staged fault test results and real operation of the protection scheme was presented.

Dr. Waruna Chandrasena was graduated with B.Sc (Eng) in Electrical Engineering with First Class honours from the University of Moratuwa in 1997. He received his PhD from the University of Manitoba in 2004. He worked as a consultant with Teshmont Consultants from 2004 to 2009. In 2009 he joined Manitoba Hydro, Canada and currently he serves as the Principal System Studies Engineer in the System Planning Department.

401.Dr. Lidula N. WIdangama Arachchige Received the President's Award for Scientific Publication

Dr. Lidula N. Widanagama Arachchige received the President’s Award for Scientific Publications at the President’s Award Ceremony held on 22 November 2016 at the Water’s Edge, Colombo. She received the Award for the highly rated scientific research as evaluated by peers and published in 2014. The recognized paper was on “Voltage balancing and synchronization of microgrids with highly unbalanced loads” published in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews 2014, Vol. 31, pp 907-920.

This year, only three of University of Moratuwa scientific affiliations were received awards for their research published in 2014. The ceremony was graced by His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena, the Hon. Minister of Science, Technology and Research and the Hon. 400.EESoc Family Get-together 2016 and "Sathsara Dahana"

"EESoC Family Get-together 2016" and "සත්සර දැහැන " organized by Electrical Engineering Society, University Of Moratuwa was held successfully for the first time on 19th November 2016 at university premises. 
All four undergraduate batches, the department academic staff and all the graduated batches: the EESoc members (family) participated in the event. The sole purpose of this get together was to bring the University of Moratuwa Electrical Engineering family together for one day, graduated batches also back to the university premises cherishing the old memories meanwhile strengthening the bond among each other. The event was held very successfully with lot of fun games, cricket matches and musical events. The day was ended with the "පැදුරු Party" on the name සත්සර දැහැන " where many staff members and students took part in singing to the musical orchestra of Electrical Engineering undergraduate students.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

399.Energy Facts and Myths - The Round-Table Conference 2016

Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) organized the annual flagship event of it, the Panel Discussion as a Round Table Conference this time. The event was held on Wednesday, December 21 at the Water’s Edge on the theme ‘Energy – Facts and Myths’.

The Deputy Minister of Power & Renewable Energy, Ajith P. Perera graced occasion as the guest of honor delivering a valuable speech on the state position in making the policies in terms of energy mix of the country. The gathering included charted engineers from the industry, eminent past members of EESoc, academics and researchers, young graduates, undergraduates and professionals in the field of electrical engineering.

The moderator of the Round-table conference was Dr. Narendra de Siva, Head of Engineering, Lanka Electricity Company (Pvt.) Ltd and the panel comprised Prof. Priyantha Wijethunga, Energy Specialist, ADB; Dr. TilakSiyambalapitiya, Managing Director, RMA Consultants; Dr. Mahesh Jayaweera, Senior Lecturer, Civil Eng. Department, University of Moratuwa; Buddhika Samarasekara, Chief Engineer, Generation Planning, Prof. Prinath Dias, Senior Lecturer, Electrical Eng. Department, University of Moratuwa; Dr. A.G.T. Sugathapala, Senior Lecturer, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa and Damitha Kumarasinghe, Director General, PUCSL.

The round table conference was a mind opening discussion to select the best power plant options for the next two decades for Sri Lanka. Discussion was open questioning whether it would be coal, natural gas, nuclear, renewable or a mix of it. The Panel comprising of prominent specialists in the field discussed the matter focusing on techno-economic facts and myths of different generation technologies elaborating on facts and myths in implementing these technologies in terms of finance, regulatory, energy security and environmental aspects. The audience enthusiastically participated in the discussion at the end. 398.Prof Sisil Kumarawadu gives a keynote address on "Intelligent Buildings: The Past and the Future"

Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu shared lessons and insights from his years’ long involvements in the areas of systems automation and control as a keynote speaker on 21st of October, 2016, at the IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technological Trends (IEEE ICETT’16) that was held at the Baselios Mathews II College of Engineering, KL, India. The speech titled “Intelligent Buildings: The Past and the Future” discussed the transition from the past classical methods that are predominantly prevalent in South Asia to the future of intelligent buildings in their quest to achieve the optimal resource and operational efficiency in the light of emerging technological trends in built-in control hardware, power electronics and induction motor drives, internet-of-things, big data analytics, and cloud computing.

397.Participation of the Electrical Engineering Department in the TECHNO 2016 Exhibition of IESL

The Department participated in the TECHNO 2016 Exhibition, along with several other academic departments of the University.  One of the exhibits provided by the Department was a Tesla Coil, designed and fabricated by Level 2 students, which was one of the main attractions of the stall of the University.  The department also provided an Interactive service robot with human-like hand eye coordination as an exhibit.  The University stall was judged first among all the stalls of tertiary educational institutes.

392.Opening of Pioneering Engineering Batch - LTL Research Facility

The pioneering engineering batch of 1966, donated an Automation, Control and Electrical Drive Research Facility to the Department of Electrical Engineering in celebration of their golden jubilee. The sole sponsor of the laboratory was LTL Transformers Ltd. Mr. U D Jayawardena, CEO of LTL Holdings was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. The “LTL-PEB Electrical Machines Research Lab” is a state of the art laboratory, consisting of a Universal Test Rig, which can be used for both undergraduate and postgraduate academic and research work, in the areas of Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives and Control Systems. Professor. KKYW Perera, the Chancellor of UOM and Professor Ananda Jayawardane, the Vice Chancellor of the UOM declared open the new facility at the ceremony organised by the Department on the 28th of September.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

396.Dr. Asanka Rodrigo participated for a Technical Training on Lightning Protection at the OBO Bettermann GmbH & Co. KG

Dr. Asanka Rodrigo participated for the Technical Training on Lightning and Transient Overvoltage Protection training at the manufacturing and testing facility of the OBO Bettermann, Germany from 27th September to 03rd October 2016. The training sessions and hands on experience on lightning protection and high voltage testing brought knowledge on most modern technologies on lightning and high voltage transient protections. Dr. Rodrigo had chance to visit the BET Testing Centre for lightning protection, which is the biggest Lightning protection testing facility in Europe.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

395.Talk on "Utilization of Modern Developments in Power Electronics, Automation and control for local Engineering applications"

Graduate of UoM, former Manager of Emerson Industrial Automation in Sydney, Eng. Ananda Sebastian, delivered a talk to UoM students "Utilization of Modern Developments in Power Electronics, Automation and control for local Engineering applications" including the challenging moving of 3000 tons of concrete seating over distances of 18ft to change shapes of the former Olympic stadium for different sports.

394.Graduation of the Batch of 2011

Electrical Engineering students of the 2011 batch received their BSc Engineering degrees from the Chancellor of the University on the 25th of August at the Convocation held at Bandaranayaka Memorial International Conference Hall.  15 students received First Class degrees, 59 received Second Class (Upper Division) degrees and 20 received Second Class (Lower Division) degrees and 5 received General pass degrees. Ms. C. A. N. Yapa received the gold medal awarded to the student with the highest GPA.

393.Dr. Asanka Rodrigo visits ABB Dry Type Transformer Manufacturing Facility in South Korea

At the invitation of ABB Ltd Korea, Dr. Asanka Rodrigo visited the ABB Dry Type Transformer Manufacturing Facility in Chumgnam, South Korea from 24th July 2016 to 28th July 2016 and witnessed the factory acceptance tests (FAT) of three transformers purchased to the ITUM Building project of the University of Moratuwa. During the visit, he could observe the complete manufacturing process of dry type power transformers, ABB quality control procedures and complete testing procedure of dry type transformers.

391.Dr. Asanka Rodrigo visits Mitsubishi Elevators Factory in Thailand

At the invitation of Mitsubishi Elevator Asia Co., Ltd., Dr. Asanka Rodrigo visited the Mitsubishi Elevator manufacturing Facility in Amata Nakorn Industrial Estat, Chonburi, Thailand, which produces elevators and escalators for the global market from 29th June 2016 to 03rd July 2016. During the visit, he could get good understanding of modern elevator technologies such as gearless traction machine, VVVF Control and safety procedures. 390.Visit of the External Reviewer to the Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering successfully concluded its External Review process recently by inviting Professor Lalit K Goel of School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore to review the BSc Electrical Engineering programme conducted by the Department.

Prof. Goel is an eminent academic and a well-known researcher in the Field of Electrical Power Systems and a Fellow of IEEE. He is at present working as the Director, Office of Global Education and Mobility, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

The review process comprised of a 4-day visit to the Department with interviews of relevant stake holders and inspection of documentation. Prof. Goel has since then submitted his final report and the major findings of his report were presented by the Head of Department at the Head of Department meeting of the Faculty of Engineering in July, 2016.

389.Dr. WD Prasad promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer Grade II

388.Dr. Asanka Rodrigo Served as a Resource Person to the Training Program on "Green Project Manager (Master )"

Dr. Asanka Rodrigo served as a resource person to the training seminar on "Green Project Manager (Master ) at Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo on 26th and 27th June 2016, which was organized by the Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB-SL) together with Building Construction Authority (Singapore). The seminar gathered few eminent speakers and industry professionals engaged in the energy management and construction field. Dr. Rodrigo delivered speeches on "Smart Building Operation" and "Energy Efficiency for electrical systems, Sustainable lighting design and technology". Audiences of the seminar was engineers (Civil,Electrical,Mechanical etc), architects, construction project managers, facility managers , academics ,etc.

386.EESOC Gest Lecture- Fundamentals on Surge Protection: Design, Selection and Installation

The 1st guest lecture organized by the newly appointed board of Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) was held successfully on Thursday, 19th of May 2016, at 11.30 am at the EE seminar room. Mr. Praveen Gupta, the Business Unit Manager of Phoenix Contact, India shared his experience under the topic, “Fundamentals on Surge Protection: Design Selection and Installation”. His lecture covered why the surge protection vary from installation to installation and explained how the design changes with the application highlighting the selection criteria for different installations.

385.WE ARE WITH YOU 2016

This year for the 17th consecutive time “We Are With You (WAWY)”, the annual charity program for the differently abled students in School for the Deaf, Rathmalana organized by Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) was held on 17th May 2016 at university premises under the theme “Sinhala and Tamil New Year.” This is one of the most delightful events in University of Moratuwa. 
The proceedings of the event commenced with the inaugural ceremony held at the Civil Auditorium. EESoc patrons Prof. J.R. Lucas and Prof. H.Y.R. Perera, Head of the Department Prof. N. Wickramarachchi, President of the EESoc Dr. Lidula Widanagama Arachchige, and members of the academic staff were among the guests who graced the occasion. The session included a quiz competition between two teams representing the school which displayed their knowledge, a drama item performed by the Undergraduates, amazing dancing items performed by the students from school for the deaf and a speech conducted by a hearing impaired student in sign language who is currently studying at the University of Moratuwa, which inspired everyone.
The most highlighted item of the session was the donation of a hearing-aid for the little girl, Denethi Theekshana Weerakoon in grade 3 at the school for the deaf. This donation was made by the 96/97 Electrical Engineering Batch of University of Moratuwa, who initiated the We Are With You (WAWY) program in the year 2000 at the University. The Principal of the School for the Deaf, Rathmalana extended her gratitude to the EESoc and 96/97 batch for recommencing the donation of hearing-aids saying that it is the most important donation for the school as most of the students cannot afford them.
After the refreshments, the children were entertained through a series of games and fun activities. They all were full with some gifts which are offered for the wining and participation. An Art Exhibition was also held at the Old Gymnasium of the University where the outstanding paintings selected under each category were awarded prizes as an encouragement. Moreover donations including steel cupboards, pedestal fans, agricultural equipment, and CFL bulbs were handed over to the school and gifts were distributed among students. This wonderful evening came to an end with the Undergraduates joining the dance floor to entertain the students.
WAWY was once again a memorable day to the students of the Deaf School of Ratmalana as well as for the members of EESoc, which brought smiles to all.

384.Annual General Meeting of the Electrical Engineering Society

The Annual General Meeting of the Electrical Engineering Society (EESoc) of University of Moratuwa was held for the 20th time on 05th of May 2016 at University premises. Academic staff lead by the Emeritus Professor J.R. Lucas and Prof. H.Y.R. Perera who are patrons of the society and the Head of the Department, Prof. N. Wickramarachchi together with the undergraduate students of the department of Electrical Engineering were among the gathering. Minutes of the Annual General Meeting 2015 and the financial report for the past year were read by the secretary and the junior treasurer respectively and were approved to be true and correct by the audience.
The new board of members for the year ahead was appointed and resumed their duties with the warm wishes of the retiring members of the board who served immensely towards the betterment of the society and the department through many successful events including the annual charity programme 'We Are With You' as well as the impressive Panel Discussion.
The new board is headed by Dr. Lidula N. Widangama Arachchige as the President and Dr. Upuli Jayatunga as the Senior Treasurer consisting of eight members from the final year undergraduate students. The AGM was followed by an entertainment session which reflected the talents of the undergraduates of the Department of Electrical Engineering adding glamour to the event.

383.Train the Trainer for Embarking Countries in Phase I of the Milestones Appro

Dr. KTMU Hemapala participated the training program on "Train the Trainer for Embarking Countries in Phase I of the Milestones Approach" held at the Argonne National Laboratory, USA from 25th April-13th May. The training course was organized by the Department of Technical Cooperation of the Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in cooperation with the Government of the United States of America through Argonne National Laboratory within the framework of the TC project RAS/2/018 "Supporting Decision Making for Nuclear Power Planning and Development - Phase III".

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

382.Paper Presentation at 2016 IEEE International conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA)

The paper entitled “Enhancing Human-Robot Interaction by Interpreting Uncertain Information in Navigational Commands Based on Experience and Environment” has been presented in the 2016 IEEE International conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) held May16-21, 2016, Stockholm, Sweden by Viraj Muthugala, a research student in the Department of Electrical Engineering who is working under supervision of Dr. Buddhika Jayasekara. They are working on development of MIRob (Moratuwa Intelligent Robot), an intelligent service robot for domestic environments in the robotics and control laboratory of the department of Electrical Engineering. 
IEEE International conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) is the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society’s flagship conference and it has the highest H index in the robotics subject category according to the Google Scholar Metrics.
It is commendable that the researchers of the Department of Electrical Engineering were able to present their work at this premier forum of the robotics field. This research was funded by the Senate Research Capital Grant No: SRC/CAP/14/16.

381.Dr. Asanka Rodrigo participated for the IAEA Regional Training Course on Nuclear Power Planning and Development in Japan

At the invitation of International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA), Dr. Rodrigo participated for the Regional Training Course on Nuclear Power Planning and Development, in Japan from 23rd May to 03rd June 2016.

Delegates from 9 different countries participated for the session. The training covered the areas like nuclear energy policies, how to start nuclear power project based on Korea experiences, Japanese nuclear regulation, Reflections on the nuclear accident, nuclear liability, insurance and conventions, etc.

During the visit, Dr. Rodrigo got a chance to visit the Virtual reality of Nuclear reactors at Toppan, Ohma Nuclear Power Plant construction site, Rokkasho nuclear fuel cycle facilities, Mihama nuclear power station, Tsuruga Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Center, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) plant at Kobe and Japan Steel Works (JSW) plant in Muroran. He also had chance to visit to Wakasa-wan Energy Research Center(WERC) and the Research Institute of Nuclear Engineering at University of Fukui.

380.The best paper award at Mercon 2016

The research paper “Wireless Power Transmission for Multiple Devices” authored by S.R.A.Bolonne, A.K.K.Chanaka, G.C.Jayawardhana, I.H.T.D.Lionel and D.P.Chandima of the Department of Electrical Engineering was awarded the best paper award of “Power Systems, Electrical Machines and High Voltage Track” at the 2nd International Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (Mercon) 2016 held in April 2016 at the University of Moratuwa. “Wireless Power Transmission for Multiple Devices” was a final year undergraduate project of 2011 EE Batch and conducted by the students S.R.A.Bolonne, A.K.K.Chanaka, G.C.Jayawardhana and I.H.T.D. 379.Best Final Year Undergraduate Project 2016 - '11 Batch

The Department of Electrical Engineering conducted the evaluation of Final Year Undergraduate projects between 5th and 8th April 2016. The EE academic staff selected the following projects as the best projects in the Final Year 2015/16.

01. Wireless Power Transmission to Power Multiple Devices, by Mr. Sheron Bolonne, Mr.  Kasun Chanaka, Mr. Gunindu Jayawardhana and Ms. Thedani Lionel, and supervised by Dr. D P Chandima.

02. Design and Implementation of an Integrated Building Managment System (iBMS), by Mr. Oshada Illuppeganama, Mr. Maduranga Kaluarachchi, Ms. Danushi Liyanage and Mr. JanakaSilva, and supervised by Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu, Eng. Minoj Silva and Eng. Ranil Roshan.

03. Development of a Single Phase Digital Prepaid Energy Meter, by Mr. Isuru Lakmal, Ms. Sasikala Roshani, Mr. Gihan Samarakoon and Mr. Savindu Samararathne, and supervised by Dr. Asanka Rodrigo.

378.EESoc Gest Lecture- Integrating Clean Energy in Small Power Systems

Dr. Priyantha Wijayatunga, who was a Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and currently a Principal Energy Specialist at the Asian Development Bank, Manila, Philippine, paid a courtesy to visit the Department recently. During the visit, he delivered a guest lecture on " Integrating Clean Energy in Small Power Systems " at the Electrical Engineering Seminar Room which was organized by the Electrical Engineering Society. The guest lecture was attended by the students and the academic staff.

 

 

 

 

 

 

377.EE Quiz - EE 11' Batch

A Quiz Competition was conducted for the graduating batch of Electrical Engineering students on the 26th of April. First round of Quiz was for 25 final year groups as a written Quiz. The 4 best groups were selected for an interactive 5 rounds of questions. Members of group 3, Mr. S.R.A.Bolonne, Mr. A.K.K.Chanaka, Mr. G.C.Jayawardhana and Ms. I.H.T.D. Lionel came out winners in the bonus round after a tough competition.

376.Farewell to the academic staff from EE 11' Batch

The EE 11' batch organized a farewell event to pay gratitude to the academic staff of the Electrical Engineering Department on 26th April 2016 at the Department premises. The Head of the Department and the members of the academic staff were present at the occasion with the students of EE 11' batch. The event was immensely enjoyed by all the staff members and tokens of appreciation were presented to all the lecturers. Prof. Rohan Lucas, Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa,  attended the  TV programme “ROBA EVE" on MTV channel TV1, and talked on “What you should know about lightning” on Wednesday 6th April 2016, educating the general public on how to protect from lightning strikes.

374.Seminar - Over-current Protection

Prof. Rohan Lucas, Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, delivered a speech on Over-current Protection at the IEE Wiring Regulations Course at the IESL on Saturday 2nd April 2016 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Around 100 engineers participated for the course.

373.Dr. DP Chandima promoted to the post of Senior Lecturer Grade I

372.Dr. Thushara Damayanthi joins the Department of Electrical Engineering

Dr. Thushara Damayanthi was appointed as a Senior Lecturer (on-contract) with effect from April 2016 in the Department of Electrical Engineering by the Council of University of Moratuwa. Dr. Damayanthi obtained her B.Sc. Degree in Electrical Engineering in 2003 from the University of Moratuwa. She was awarded a scholarship in 2004 to pursue doctoral studies at University of Tokyo, Japan and has completed her PhD 2009. Her research interests include Nuclear Engineering and after completing her PhD she has been working in University of Tokyo as a postdoctoral research fellow from 2009 to 2013, and a research scientist at RIKEN from 2013 to 2016. The Department likes to congratulate Dr. Damayanthi on her new appointment and wishes her a long, happy and rewarding academic career.

371.Lightning 2016 - Cricket Tournament

Six-overs-a-side inter batch cricket tournament of the Department of Electrical Engineering on 24th March 2016 at the University of Moratuwa grounds successfully. 368.Dr. WD Prasad completes his doctoral studies

Dr. WD Prasad (Lecturer) completed the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Manitoba in February 2016 and resumed work at the Department of Electrical Engineering. His area of research was Power Systems Stability and Control. Dr. Prasad graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa with a Second Class Honours Pass in 2005. He has also successfully completed a research M.Phil in 2007 in the same Department. 367.Keynote Address on Optimal Green Design of Buildings through BACSs

Prof. Sisil Kumarawadu delivered a keynote address at the Springer International Conference on Soft-Computing Systems (ICSCS’16) that was held on the 20th of February, 2016, at NIU, Kumaracoil, India. The address, titled “Optimizing Green Design through Building Automation & Control Systems (BACSs)”, highlighted the strengths and limitations of soft-computing techniques in application domains such as energy optimal automatic distributed control systems with special emphasis on realization of environmentally responsible and energy efficient smart buildings by the use of BACSs. Current and future directions of BACSs were outlined in the light of recent advancements in related technologies such as power electronics, high-frequency ac motors, wireless and power-line networked communication, cloud computing, and built-in control hardware.

366.UoW Honorary Fellowship

Dr. Upuli Jayatunga has been appointed as a Honorary Fellow at the School of Electrical Computer and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Wollongong for a three year term. Dr. Jayatunga continues to be involved with research collaborations through joint PhD programs and supervisions.

365.Long Service Award - Electrical Engineering

Prof. HYR Perera received the Long Service Award at the ceremony held on 1st January 2016 at the James George Hall. Prof. Perera was awarded a silver medal to recognize his 35 years of continuous and meritorious service to the University. The Department extends its warm wishes for his achievements in the career and wishes him to continue his invaluable services to the Department in many more years to come.
Prof. Perera joined the staff as an Assistant Lecturer in Electrical Engineering on 2nd June, 1980. Having concluded his doctoral studies in Germany with high accolades he returned to the Department as a Senior lecturer and was promoted to Professor and Senior Professor positions in 2004 and 2012 respectively.
