Biomedical Engineering has been instrumental in filling a gap in the healthcare systems of the world. Combining insights from medical sciences with engineering innovation, biomedical devices enable the provision of more effective healthcare.

The Centre for Biomedical Innovation (CEBI), a multidisciplinary research center of the University of Moratuwa, exists to undertake biomedical innovation and device development for Sri Lanka and the region. Currently no institution undertakes biomedical device development in Sri Lanka, but rather, relies on importing devices.

Locally developed solutions have the advantage of being cost-effective, and been tailor-made (where appropriate) to cater to the Sri Lankan biometrics.
