The Department of Architecture of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka in collaboration with its international and national academic partners organised the Third International Conference on Cities, People & Places from October 26 to 28 at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo. The theme of the conference was ‘Towards a New Urbanity; Places for Urban Coherence’’ and the Chairman was Dr Janaka Wijesundara. Welcome addresses were delivered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and the Head of the Department of Architecture. The keynote speakers were the renowned Professor of Architecture and Urban Design from the National Univesity Singapore, Prof Heng Chye Kiang, Archt Madhura Prematilleke, Principal of Team Architrave, Sri Lanka and Prof Sasanka Perera, Faculty of Social Sciences, South Asian University, New Delhi, India. The conference was conducted in four parallel sessions and participants included local and foreign architects and urban designers, urban design students, staff and researchers. Apart from the conference, the event included an inaugural ceremony, cultural show, dinner and cultural tours to the World Heritage Archaeological site of Sigiriya, Lunuganga Gardens, and the World Heritage site of the Dutch Fort of Galle. A pre-conference workshop was organised for local and foreign students and other attendees in conjunction with conference on 23 and 24 October at the Department of Architecture. The theme of the workshop was “Places for Urban Coherence”. The workshop provided a platform where bachelor and master students in architecture, town and country planning, and related disciplines were able to acquire new insights in urban issues through dialogue among academics, professionals and urban communities. Students from Thailand, India and Sri Lanka and urban design experts from Belgium, USA, Nigeria and Sri Lanka participated in this workshop.
